What Is Product Manager?

Product Manager

A product manager is an expert who centers on recognizing both the needs of customers and the overarching business goals that a product or feature is expected to meet. This individual defines the criteria for the product's success and motivates a team to bring this vision to fruition.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Product Manager

The specific duties of a product manager can differ based on the organization's size. In bigger companies, for example, product managers are part of teams filled with specialists. They work alongside researchers, analysts, and marketers to compile feedback, while developers and designers handle the regular tasks of creating designs, testing out prototypes, and identifying any issues. Product managers in such environments receive considerable support but are also tasked with the challenge of uniting various stakeholders around a common vision.

In contrast, product managers at smaller companies may not invest as much time in gaining consensus but instead, engage more directly in the tangible efforts needed to define and execute a vision.

However, regardless of the organization's size, effective product managers typically focus on a few key activities:

  • Grasping and advocating for the needs of the users.
  • Keeping track of market trends and conducting analyses to stay competitive.
  • Establishing and communicating a clear vision for the product.
  • Ensuring that all stakeholders are in agreement with the product's vision.
  • Determining the priority of different product features and functionalities.
  • Cultivating a collective understanding among larger teams to promote autonomous decision-making.
